One of my new year resolutions was to do some voluntary work to give something back to my local community. I was not being totally altruistic, as I decided that if I was going to donate my skills and my time, then I should also get something back. I settled on volunteering for the Old House Museum in Bakewell. I am photographing items in their collection when required, and helping them out with their social media activity. It takes a few hours a week and is a short and pretty walk from my house.
I assumed that development of my social media skills was my payback, but that is only part of it.
The museum relies on an army of volunteers in order to exist, preserve the collections for the future, and to help interest and educate its visitors.
I have now discovered that the real payback for me is that it feels good to give.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
